I think Kathmandu is stuck in the 90's. Everywhere I go I hear 90's music - Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Metallica's black album. Also, dread-locked hippies wander around the streets of Thamel in droves. Even the weed the old dude at the raggae bar was smoking smelled like bad weed from my college days. I can see how this place would be "awesome" to a 20-something student on summer holiday. Bitchin dude!
I must say that this is my favorite toilet of all time. I've never really liked sitting on toilets, it just kind of freaks me out. I've never gotten the hang of the asian squat toilet, it just seems weird to be so close to the ground, and they're always smelly and covered in urine - yuck! However, I have found toilet Nirvana. This is the best of both worlds! you can stand on the lid, well actually squat n the lid. You're high up off the bathroom floor, and you don't have to touch the toilet with your bum. It's fantabulous! Now if only it wasn't pink....
Unfortunately I changed rooms in my hotel to save some money, and sadly the toilet in my new room is the regular old western style. Sigh....
Be thankful you're not a goat and living in Nepal at this time of year. Today is Maha Astami (Great Eighth Day) and tonight is Kala Ratri (Black Night). This is the eighth day of Dasain, and the start of the sacrifices to the goddess Durga. Dasain festival celebrates the victory of Durga over the evil buffalo demon Mahisasura. At midnight tonight, eight buffaloes and 108 goats will be beheaded by sword at Durbar square. Then tomorrow, the real slaughter begins - goats are tied up everywhere on the streets today, and tomorrow night the menu will likely be goat steaks, goat stew, and maybe spaghetti with goat sauce.
My flight left from Chengdu and flew to Lhasa. Most of the terrain underneath was barren Tibetian plateau as far as the eye can see. We did fly over a few snowy peaks though. We landed in Lhasa where we exited the plane, went through customs and got our exit stamps from China, then we got right back on the same plane and took off for Kathmandu. The flight from Lhasa was awesome! We flew by Everest, and who knows how many other hundreds of crazy snow capped peaks. From the plane you could see that we were pretty much level with the summit of Everest. I got a ton of pictures, though through the airplane window, they didn't come out all that great.
Kathmandu: So this place is crazy. Much less developed than cities in China. Way dirtier for sure, but that doesn't matter much to me. It's already been hella (that's for you sf people) easier to travel here - everyone speaks English. The driving is just as crazy, if not crazier, than China, though the honking isn't nearly as bad. It turns out that a huge country wide festival is starting - Dasain. It's hard to miss the hundreds of dog fighting kites being flown by kids throughout the city.
I realize that I've been using my blog lately as a platform to bitch about stuff - and particularly China. That was not the intention of the site - a bunch of angry rants.... And I shouldn't bag on China so much. I really enjoyed most of my time there. I met so many friendly Chinese people, as well as travelers along the way, and some of the sites were simply amazing. Yeah, the last couple weeks sucked, but that's just bad luck. I'm sure I'll be missing it soon, and will be happy to return. But for now, I'm really stoked to be in Nepal.
After all the B.S. that has happened in the last couple of weeks, I've been feeling pretty down - and a bit pissed off at this point. Anyways, this evening I stripped my packs down to assess what things I still have, and repack before heading to the airport tomorrow. In doing so I ran across the card everyone gave me at the going away party at Il Pirata. That was so damn cool to read again. I really appreciate the card, and reading it again really meant a lot. I really miss my San Francisco peoples - damn!!! I hope you are all doing well. My thoughts go out to you all. BTW, my favorite is still yours Zul - Fuck you too!!! (JK, love you man)![]()
