Travel Gear List

Ever wonder what I carry with me while I travel? Well this is a snapshot of everything I had on me when I wrote this - Thursday, July 1, 2010. The list has changed a lot since I started almost one year ago, but I'm down to a pretty consistent list at this point. I've gotten rid of lot's of things that I didn't need along the way, and I've added things that come in handy on the road. I'm sure many people would scoff at this list and say it's WAY WAY WAY too much stuff to be carrying around, but I've found that most of my stuff I use often, and a lot of it -- like the stuff in the first aid kit -- is there for emergency.

Bags, containers:

  • Main Pack - Eagle Creek Explorer LT Travel Pack
  • Secondary pack - North Face Borealis
  • Eagle Creek Pack-it cubes (3)
    • wires & cords for electronics
    • chargers, and other electronics accessories
    • first aid kit
  • 13" Leather padded envelope for MacBook from Civilian Labs
  • 15 Liter dry bag from WXtex - for MacBook and Kindle - I could drop my pack in the ocean, and the MacBook & Kindle will be just fine, though I hope to never put it to the test
  • 20 Liter dry bag from FeelFree - for Cameras, external hard drive, and anything else that can't get wet - same as above
  • Seal Line waterproof container for iPod - waterproof to 3 meters
  • Case Logic hard case for external hard drive
  • Lowpro camera bag for PowerShot
  • Lowpro camera bag for T1i
  • Cullmann soft lens bag
  • plastic hard case for 77mm lens filters
  • leather hard case for 52mm lens filters
  • Heavy duty ziplock passport container from Seattle Sports - I needed something substantial for my passport, this seems like a top notch waterproof container
  • Eagle Creek Pack-it Compression Set (2) - actually only using one at this point, but takes up no space, and is good to have if I were to get stuck in a downpour for an extended period
    • Large bag - holds rain jacket, and misc clothing
    • Medium bag - empty now
  • Eagle Creek Clothing folder - contains shirts, shorts, and pants
  • Sunglasses case from Civilian Labs
  • Plastic zip top bags from Eagle Creek for toiletries - 3
  • small bag for toilet paper

Electronics:

  • iPod - 2nd Gen - 8GB
    • charger & cables
    • battery chargers - one wall, and one battery backup
    • headphones
  • 13" MacBook Pro - 160GB HD
    • charger cable
  • LaCie Rugged Hard Disk - 500GB - firewire/usb 2
  • Kindle 2
  • Thumb drive - 8GB
  • USB SD card reader (never used)
  • LG phone & charger
  • headphones for phone (never used)
  • firewire cable for external hard drive
  • USB to micro usb cable for Kindle
  • Ethernet cable (used at my hotel on the first two nights in Shanghai, but never since)
  • 1/4 inch headphone jack to RCA connector for connecting iPod to stereo (never used)
  • All in one wall adapter from REI (got when I was in the US, but have not needed in Thailand - would have been great when I was in China)
  • North American & Asian plug connectors for Apple power supplies
  • North American to Asian plug adapter (was essential in Nepal)
  • 1 to 3 outlet converter (fantastic)
  • 3 outlet extension cord (totally over sized and over weight, but I use it constantly)

Camera equipment:

  • Canon PowerShot SD950 IS
  • Canon Rebel T1i
  • 18 - 55mm Kit lens w/ filters & hood
  • 50mm Fixed lens w/ filters & hood
  • 10 - 22mm Ultra wide angle w/ filters & hood - now my lens of choice
  • 3 8GB SD cards
  • 2 512 MB SD cards (never used - but keep for backup)
  • battery charger for T1i
  • spare battery for T1i
  • battery charger for PowerShot
  • spare battery for PowerShot
  • Timer control - wired
  • Shutter release - wireless (used once - probably no longer needed now that I have the timer control
  • tripod
  • Swivel head attachment for tripod from Cullmann
  • Professional Lens cleaning kit from Adorama (have not used yet)
  • Nikon Lens cleaner (very useful)
  • pacsafe anti-slash shoulder strap
  • hand strap for T1i
  • spare shoulder strap for camera

Clothing:

  • Underwear - 3 pairs of ExOfficio Boxer Briefs - perhaps the best underwear ever made
  • Socks - 3 pair of Smart Wool Socks
  • Shirts - 3
    • 2 Pair IceBreaker 150 weight wool shirts - amazing T-Shirts, dry much faster than cotton, and do not stink like synthetic material
    • 1 Cotton T-Shirt - only wear when stationary since cotton takes forever to dry
  • Long sleeve shirt - 1 IceBreaker mid-weight
  • Pants - 2
    • North Face - fantastic pants and are still going (mostly) strong
    • REI - don't like them too much, but they're much better than the ExOfficio pants that I had before
  • Shorts - 1 Pair Quicksilver board shorts
  • Boots - Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - (They seem to run 1 size small, so I had to go up to 13s). I can't begin to say how happy I am with these boots. The reviews I read said that the soles wear out quickly, but I've been wearing them over a year, and have put well over 300 mile on them at this point, and the soles are fine - worn, but still good. The water-proofing is great too - I've only gotten wet feet once, and that was from walking through rivers on the Annapurna Circuit. These boots kick ass!
  • Flip-flops - some knock-offs I bought on the street in Chiang Mai. Flip-flops are essential for showers in "less than clean" hotels & hostels!
  • Hat - Volcom knock-off I bought for a few bucks on Phi Phi
  • Sunglasses - 2 Pair
  • Wallet from Civilian Labs - Hands down the best wallet I've ever owned. It has a retractable cable that I attach to my belt. I've found my wallet dangling more than a few times after getting out of taxis, or getting up from a table at a restaurant. This wallet has saved my butt many many times.
  • Fleece jacket - essential when I was in Nepal, and Vietnam, but not really needed now. I keep it because it makes great padding for my pack, and who knows when I may need it
  • Rain jacket - haven't used nearly as much as I thought I would. I did use it quite a bit in China, but haven't been using it lately. I enjoy getting soaked now.
  • Toque - Essential in Nepal, haven't used it since
  • Belt
  • Spare laces for boots
  • (jewelry) 0 gauge plugs for ears - 3 pair
  • Money Belt - Don't really use anymore, but I probably should
  • Leg Stash (see above)

First Aid Kit:

  • Water purification tablets & neutralizing tablets
  • Oral rehydration salts - 3 packs
  • Azithromycin tablets
  • Ciprofloxacn
  • Malarone tablets
  • Pepto Bismol tablets
  • Antacid tablets
  • Gas-X tablets
  • Antibiotic Ointment packets
  • Hydrocortisone packets
  • Tweezers - Rarely need, but would not want to be without
  • Scissors - There's a trick to sneaking them through airport security
  • Tick removal tool - Thankfully I have not needed yet
  • Small magnifying glass
  • Needle
  • Misc bandages
  • Moleskin - Very good for blisters

Toiletries:

  • 3 oz plastic bottles for shampoo, etc. 4
  • Ultrathon Insect Repellent - 35% DEET
  • Insect Repellent - 20% DEET
  • Insect Repellent - 15% DEET

Really?

Anonymous — Tue, 12/13/2011 - 15:31

Wow! Do you really fit all this in your Eagle Creek travel pack? Really??

  • reply

Eagle Creek, plus the North Face

dylane1 — Thu, 12/15/2011 - 13:32

I do fit them all into the two packs, not just the Eagle creek. But yes, really. And yes, it's too much stuff. I need to trim it down.

So do I understand that you

Anonymous — Tue, 12/27/2011 - 17:49

So do I understand that you travel with two packs? One on your back and the other, what, just held in your arms?

I'm heading out for a no-return-date-in-mind trip in late summer and just trying to get a handle on all this!

  • reply

I wear them both

dylane1 — Wed, 12/28/2011 - 17:03

I wear the small pack on the front, and the larger pack on my back. They fit quite comfortably together. I have just purchased a new pack from Hazard 4 to replace the Northface, and will post a picture of it soon.

I suppose I should add a picture of the bags filled, and me wearing them, so you can get an idea.

Nice list

Wow, I really love your list. It's great. What's that security trick with scissors?

  • reply

Well, I'm beginning to think

dylane1 — Wed, 11/30/2011 - 13:55

Well, I'm beginning to think there is no trick, and they just don't care anymore. I used to have them sitting at a certain angle in my pack, and my guess was that they didn't look like scissors on the x-ray screen. But I've since taken them through many many airport security points, with no regard to how I've placed them in the bag. So I can only guess they don't view my travel scissors as a threat....

I think they don't care about

Anonymous — Wed, 12/28/2011 - 12:59

I think they don't care about such things in checked baggage. Maybe.

By the way, I live in Eugene many years! I loved almost everything about ... but for that conspicuously missing glowing orb in the sky. :-)

  • reply

Actually in carry-on

dylane1 — Wed, 12/28/2011 - 17:05

I do not check my baggage, I only do carry on luggage, and I regularly take the scissors on with me, so I guess they just stopped worrying about scissors...

So the Eagle Creek Explorer

Anonymous — Wed, 12/28/2011 - 21:52

So the Eagle Creek Explorer bag fits in an overhead bin? Very cool.

I've been wanting to try the Eagle Creek but the local REIs in Phoenix don't have these. Otherwise, there is zero selection anywhere else. Just might have to take trip to Boulder for some selection. Darn.
